After months of speculation, on October 15, 2025, Apple finally revealed its newest MacBook, and it’s a doozy.
The new MacBook Pro 14” M5 laptop is teeming with power under the hood. To put a finer point on it, the new M5 chip is no joke. But is it the right laptop for your needs? Let’s dive in and find out.
Power! Unlimited Power!
OK, Star Wars reference aside, the M5 chip is a super performer. The specs are:
• CPU: 10-core total with 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores.
• GPU: 10-core GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing and Neural Accelerators in each GPU core.
• Neural Engine: 16-core.
Not into the tech specs? Here’s the TL;DR: Apple says M5 brings notable CPU gains, bigger GPU gains (including AI acceleration), and major efficiency improvements over M4.
Power Gains Come at Power Prices
But the newfound power comes at a significant price hike over other Apple laptops in a similar size range, such as the current-generation MacBook Air 15” M4 model. Comparatively, the new MacBook Pro 14” M5 starts at $1,599 USD, while the MacBook Air 15” M4 starts at $1,199 USD. That’s a $400 swing, and the M4 Air is often on sale for an additional $100 discount at select retailers. $500 is a massive price difference and a significant consideration when deciding if the new 14” MacBook Pro M5 is right for you.
The Right Connections
All on their own, MacBooks are incredibly competent, powerful laptops. But ports matter, as they open up your MacBook to a world of new connectivity options. Getting the MacBook with the ports you need to match your workflow—or your lifestyle—will enrich your MacBook ownership experience.
The 14” MacBook Pro features the same port selection in its chassis as the other Pro models, including:
• Three Thunderbolt 4 ports
• HDMI port
• SDXC card slot
• 3.5 mm headphone jack
• MagSafe 3 port
The MacBook Air 15”, on the other hand, is limited to:
• Two Thunderbolt 4 ports
• MagSafe 3 charging port
• 3.5 mm headphone jack
If you need the extra Thunderbolt 4 port, a means to read and write to SD cards, and the ability to connect your Mac to a display over HDMI, the Pro’s your huckleberry. If you’d rather save the cash and tote a much more svelte chassis around, the Air’s the one.
It’s Got the Look
An M5 chip and more ports aren’t the only benefits to upgrading to the MacBook Pro 14” M5. The displays—despite Apple’s similar-sounding marketing names—couldn’t be more different. Specifically:
MacBook Air 15” M4 — Liquid Retina (IPS LCD)
• 2880 × 1864 resolution @ 224 ppi
• 500 nits SDR brightness
• 60 Hz
MacBook Pro 14” M5 — Liquid Retina XDR (mini-LED)
• 3024 × 1964 resolution @ 254 ppi (more resolution on a smaller screen)
• XDR brightness: 1000 nits sustained full-screen, 1600 nits peak (HDR)
• SDR brightness: up to 1000 nits (outdoor)
• ProMotion 120 Hz
It may cost $400–$500 more than the Air, but the display on the 14” MacBook Pro M5 is just magnificent. Once you look at a ProMotion 120 Hz mini-LED display, going back to 60 Hz and an IPS display is tough. Really. Tough. Spend the time looking at the screens on both before you drop any money. After all, the screen is the part you look at to get anything out of your efforts on the computer in the first place. You’ll REALLY want to be satisfied with your choice here.
Living With It Day In and Day Out
Specs are great and all, but at the end of the day, you’ve got to live with your choice of computer day in and day out. Making the right call now will save you lots of headaches later.
There’s no getting around it: the MacBook Air at any size is a sleek, beautiful machine that’s easy to carry and a delight to use. Lightweight, eminently portable, and with amazing battery life for its size—up to 18 hours of video streaming (up to 15 hours wireless web) according to Apple’s official stats.
My wife’s 15” Air has shown similar battery life when the display is kept around 50% and tasks are kept to basic productivity, email, and web browsing. It’s a delightful device to use, carry, and even just look at. It’s come a long way from the days of the first one being pulled out of the manila envelope in that famous ad in 2008.
But if true all-day battery life is a must, the 14” MacBook Pro M5 is a must-have. Eighteen hours not going to cut it? Apple quotes up to 24 hours of video streaming (up to 16 hours wireless web). Twenty-four! My first laptop around 2011 had about two hours before it had to be tethered to the wall, and that Sony Vaio didn’t hold a candle to the power of the M5.
The tradeoff for that extra battery life isn’t much: a little more thickness and not much more weight to carry around. The 14” Pro is about 0.04 kg (0.09 lb) heavier than the 15” Air—1.55 kg vs 1.51 kg. That’s wild. It’s almost making the concept of the “Air” moniker obsolete.
Which One Should You Get?
It all comes down to two things: budget and use cases. If you can swing the extra $400–$500 to step up to the Pro, there’s a lot of value to be had in the performance it offers. But $400–$500 also buys a LOT of coffee to enjoy at your favorite cafe while you use your Air. And if you’re on a budget, the Air offers impressive everyday performance and, perhaps, the absolute best bang for the buck—not just of any MacBook on the market, but any laptop on the market—period.
If your use case involves tasks like web browsing, email, watching videos, light productivity, and light photo editing, you’ll be glad you bought the Air and saved the cash. None of those tasks are likely to take advantage of the extra horsepower afforded by the M5 chip on a daily basis.
However, if your use case involves things like 4K video editing, keeping multiple browser tabs open at the same time, color-accurate photo editing, and you need all-day battery life to do them, the Pro is the way to go. Its display is unmatched in the MacBook line, 24 hours of battery life will help the computer stay awake longer than you do, and the form factor nearly rivals that of the Air nowadays. Pro MacBooks are built to handle pro workflows, and if you need it, you need it—and you’ll be glad you invested in the extra specs and ports.

Bottom Line
The wonderful thing about MacBooks is that they’re MacBooks. No matter which one of these you decide on, there isn’t a “wrong” choice—only one that matches your specific use cases and budget in the best way. It’s just like the doctor said: an Apple a day keeps Windows away, after all.
